Paul Bugas brings decades of field experience to our conversation about freshwater environments, the native fishes of Virginia (and invasive fish), and how we can conserve and promote their well-being.

The book includes:

• more than 175 vibrant, full-color illustrations, set side by side with descriptions of each fish
• line drawings that depict the most reliable diagnostic characteristics for field identifications
• descriptions of Virginia's freshwater habitats
• examples of incredible fish spawning and feeding behavior
• tips on observing fish in the wild and in captivity
• up-to-date fish distribution maps
• a complete glossary of terms

Paul E. Bugas is a recipient of the Elizabeth Cabell Dugdale Award for Conservation at the 2014 Conservation Forum November 12 in Norfolk. He is a fisheries biologist who has rendered outstanding service in the conservation and wise development of the natural resources of Virginia.

Martin was born in Kenya and moved to Harrisonburg, Virginia, in 2013 to pursue his education at James Madison University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Science and Technology in 2017. Martin joined WMRA shortly after graduation in August 2017.
