A New Take on Family Dynamics

Family Hands.jpg

Most of us have heard about differences in parenting styles, but new research shows the kind of family culture a child experiences can also be all important.

A new study identifies four distinct family cultures in America.

In these different types of American families, such characteristics as, "value of education," and "importance of religion," and even "levels of optimism," vary widely.

We talk with two of the Virginia researchers who helped develop these findings.

Guests:
Carl Desportes Bowman, Ph.D. - Director of Survey Research, Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. Researcher affiliated with the Culture of American Families Project.

Megan Juelfs-Swanson - Associate Fellow, Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture at the University of Virginia. Doctoral Candidate in Sociology at UVa.  Researcher affiliated with the Culture of American Families Project.

Tom Graham was Senior Producer and host of WMRA's Virginia Insight from 2006 to 2015.
