Writing a short story is different from writing a novel, but both benefit from advance planning. Whether you are a “plotter” or a “pantser” (that is, someone who writes from a detailed plot outline or writes “by the seat of their pants”), some preliminary choices are essential. Where does the story begin? Who’s telling the story? Whose story is it? What is the primary conflict and how will it be resolved? How might the story end? It’s also important to allow yourself to change the answers to these questions during the process of writing—that’s what keeps it fun! In this generative workshop, we’ll create a plan for writing your short story or novel following the three-act structure so common in film and fiction or an alternative, more innovative construct. This workshop is taught by award-winning author Clifford Garstang.
