Adventure, Tragedy, and a Quest for Meaning on the Appalachian Trail with Earl Swift

In 1990, Earl Swift backpacked the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia. He emerged a better problem-solver, and a committed outdoorsman. But he also left the trail with baggage. Early on his trek, he spent time with a friendly couple who were murdered weeks later at a mountaintop campsite in Pennsylvania on the trail. Earl’s new book, Up On Cove Mountain, chronicles that hike and his return to the trail thirty years later to make sense of the violence. He’s our guest for Books & Brews on Tuesday, October 13, at 7pm in Harrisonburg at Pale Fire Brewing. WMRA’s Chris Boros asked Earl about his time on the trail.
