During the pandemic, Devils Backbone Brewing has found a way to help families in need in both Nelson and Rockbridge Counties. WMRA’s Mike Tripp has the story.
They call it their “Give-Back Packs” program.
Hayes Humphreys is chief operating officer for the company. He says these boxes can be purchased at both their basecamp location in Nelson County and the Outpost location in Lexington.
HAYES HUMPHREYS: The goal was to be able to feed a family of four for a few days at an affordable price.
A family in need of a meal pack simply calls to reserve one of the meal boxes for same day pick-up, no questions asked. However, there is a limit of one pack per family per day.
These boxes also are not just for families. They can also be for first responders, medical workers and other essential employees helping the community.
How is the program going so far? Humphreys says people are responding to help answer the need.
HUMPHREYS: People are being incredibly generous and buying a lot of boxes for other folks.
In addition to the food boxes, their distillery like others in the state has converted production at present to producing hand sanitizer.
They are directing what they have available towards just the medical community and local healthcare providers.
Humphreys says we need to take care of those folks first, so they are there when we need them.
