The morning after a stinging defeat in South Carolina, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said he would release his most recent tax returns this week, ahead of the Florida primary. The move was applauded by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who won South Carolina.
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords To Resign From Congress
The Democratic congresswoman from Arizona said she will step down this week in order to focus on her health. Giffords was shot in the head and wounded last January as she was meeting with constituents outside a supermarket in Tucson, Ariz.
Legendary Football Coach Joe Paterno Mourned
All day cars drove slowly past a bronze statue of Paterno, who coached Penn State's football team for 61 years until he was forced out last November. Many stopped and quietly walked up to the statue outside the football stadium to pay respects to "JoePa," who died Sunday.

From her public appearances, including her resignation video, it was clear that Giffords, even as a powerful symbol of the strength of human will and the advances in trauma medicine, would face significant challenges in dealing with the rigors of a re-election campaign. So her decision, though a sad reminder of what has been taken from her, was not a surprise.
Florida's Winner-Take-All Primary Heats Up GOP Race
The Florida GOP primary is one week from Tuesday, and Newt Gingrich is feeling empowered after winning the South Carolina primary. Florida is a bigger stage, where the winner will get 50 delegates — more than the first three contests combined.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman joined with other state attorneys general last year who were suing five large mortgage servicers. But he was disturbed by the shape of the agreement, and says banks wanted broad protection from lawsuits over other mortgage practices. So he started his own investigation.
