The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA currently has adoption promotions going on, so it's only $25 to adopt cats, kittens, and some dogs.
The Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA is nearly overrun with cats. I met with executive director Huck Nawaz in the shelter's conference room, which has been converted into cat-overflow territory. A little guy named Shadow is the one meowing in the background.
HUCK NAWAZ: We've got roughly 300 cats in our care right now. We've got about 50-some cats available for adoption, that have just become available, and then we've got about another 25 or 30 that are having surgery today and tomorrow; they'll be available by Thursday or Friday as well. … We've got cats everywhere.
They've taken in over 2,000 animals so far this year -- about 1,300 of which were cats and kittens. Last week, they participated in the Empty the Shelters event sponsored by the Bissell Pet Foundation, which subsidizes pet adoption fees during those promotions.
NAWAZ: We had some great adoptions. I believe we had 30-some-odd cats adopted out last week. And towards the end of last week and early this week we took in about 45 cats into our care. [sighs] So!
So, they decided to keep the cat adoption fee at $25 through this week as well. They've also added evening visiting hours on Thursday and Friday. They are still operating on an appointment-only basis -- you can sign up for a time slot at rhspca.org.
NAWAZ: We're starting to hit our threshold, so we are looking to do some transfers this week, we'll actually be transferring them to Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA.
They're also having an adoption event with dogs and kittens at Bob Wade Subaru from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. For WMRA News, I'm Randi B. Hagi.
