Liminal Lot will present an evening program of dance and sound performances, sculptural and visual artworks, historical and contemporary video footage, and open-mic sessions to commemorate the Staunton Colonial Mall and other dying malls across the nation. Viewing of visual artwork will take place from 5 - 9 PM at SolArt Center in Staunton, Virginia. Come and share your favorite mall story at the open mic (6:30 and 8:30 PM) and enjoy eco somatic performances (6 and 8 PM) inspired by the degrading rubble of what was once the Staunton Mall.
We are deconstructing the mall! and hosting a wake to acknowledge the death of one particular Staunton Mall as a symbol of a specific and familiar breed of American consumerism. The Mall conjures spells of fruity perfume, plastic rhinestones, back-to-school shopping, and greasy pretzels. Its death (in one form) opens a portal into a feral ecology of microplastics, community-informed consent, zoning, ecotones of parking lots, and successional past futures or future pasts.
Curated by local art collective, Liminal Lot, to build community networks and support structures for shared emotional experiences, informed citizen consent, and locally-driven ideas for development of shared space.
Location: SolArt Center, 6 Byers Street, Staunton, VA 24401Date: Saturday, May 18thTime: 5 - 9 PM with performances at 6 and 8 PM and open mic at 6:30 and 8:30 PMSuggested $10 donation
