Directed and co-written by four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke, WILDCAT invites the audience to weave in and out of celebrated Southern Gothic writer Flannery O’Connor's mind as she ponders the great questions of her writing: Can scandalous art still serve God? Does suffering precede all greatness? Can illness be a blessing? In 1950, Flannery (Maya Hawke) visits her mother Regina (Laura Linney) in Georgia when she is diagnosed with lupus at twenty-four years old. Struggling with the same disease that took her father’s life when she was a child and desperate to make her mark as a great writer, this crisis pitches her imagination into a feverish exploration of belief. As she dives deeper into her craft, the lines between reality, imagination, and faith begin to blur, allowing Flannery to ultimately come to peace with her situation and heal a strained relationship with her mother.

The second annual WATERWORKS new works festival runs May 17 through June 2 at Live Arts Theater in downtown Charlottesville. The three-week festival features 19 new theatrical works from local and global playwrights, 16 directors, and over 50 performers. Other featured works include Locally Sourced, the Charlottesville Playwrights Collective, and Community Deep Dive educational workshops. Start and end times vary; visit livearts.org for tickets and information.
Bluzonia is probably the finest hillbilly boogie band in central VA. The band consists of John Stubblefield (drums), Arin Bennett (bass), Dave Connolly (drums), and Doug Hedstrom (guitar). The band formed when Doug and Dave moved to the Charlottesville area and were soon joined by John. Arin is the new guy having started with Bluzonia about 15 years ago.
Doug picked up guitar at 13 when his brother took lessons from an old jazz musician. Dave took up harmonica as a young teen living in Hong Kong. John is from a musical family and fell in love with drumming. Arin started playing guitar when in high school; then played bass in a punk rock band in college.
Oak Grove Theater's 2024 season kicks off with a presentation of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, this musical features an eclectic group of "kids" competing for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.
Oak Grove Theater presents 5 plays from May through August, and tickets are sold seasonally - $60 per person for all 5 shows. Purchase tickets here. For questions regarding tickets, call Susan Vass at 540-290-4347. Shows start at 8:45 sharp; arrive as early as 6:30 to reserve a seat. Bring along a picnic dinner to enjoy or choose something from the concession stand which opens at 7:30pm.
