The “Maestra Nidia Góngora” as she is known, is the most recognized singer in the Colombian Pacific and the bearer of the innate tradition inherited from her elders and the leading singers of her community. Nidia’s versatile, innovative music fuses lyrics and rhythms such as currulaos, bundes, jugas, rumbas, and lullabies with a touch of folk, electronic beats and experimental sounds. As the founder and lead singer of Canalón de Timbiquí for over 25 years, a multiple winner of the Petronio Álvarez Festival and a Latin GRAMMY nominee, her music blends ancestral rhythms with contemporary sounds, evoking the thunder, strength, and power that inhabit the jungle and the sea. With haunting vocals her band electrifies the stage and reaffirms Góngora’s role as a guardian of tradition while offering a fresh perspective on Pacific folklore.

The House of Bernarda Alba is a provocative drama set in a small, Spanish village, which follows the legacy of Bernarda Alba, the matriarch, and her five daughters. Living under Bernarda’s control as they mourn their father’s passing, these sisters seek a world beyond their mother’s walls. Enticing audiences for 80 years, The House of Bernarda Alba is a gripping and timeless exploration of control, desire, and the power of the human spirit. Features students from JMU’s School of Theatre and Dance. Contains adult content, adult language, violence, and references to suicide. Parental discretion advised.

Stamp Out ICE is a collection of small artworks created in protest of ICE on perforated, postage-stamp-like sheets. The show features over a dozen artists from across the U.S. and Canada, including three from Minneapolis, all expressing their ire over the federal takeover of many U.S. cities.

Visitors are invited to view the collection of stamp artwork, create postcards, explore a library of mail art books, and see a firsthand demonstration of artistamp perforation on an 1888 patented Rosback perforator.

In the SVAC Member’s Gallery the theme is “Red.” The members will present their unique interpretations of the theme in each work of art which is priced to accommodate art collectors seeking pieces to expand their collection. Shenandoah Valley Art Center presents Drawing and Sketching with Pen and Ink with John Hancock. Explore the power of Pen and ink in this 5 week class for making both bold and subtle drawings and sketches. We will discover how to best use both permanent inks as well as the less well known water-soluble inks in this studio class. Working with black inks and some very traditional and contemporary alternatives, we will learn to use several strategies for pen and ink.
