Shenandoah Valley Art Center presents The Secrets of the Floating World with Lana Lambert. Ever wonder just how those amazingly colorful woodblock prints were made during the Edo period of Japan? Come and learn the secrets of the Floating World! Named so for the transient nature of life, the Ukiyo culture of Edo, Japan produced detailed records of society's daily life in their colorful block prints of geishas, kabuki actors, samurai, and scenic views of their country. Participants will see an interactive history of how the process came about and is still practiced today. This incredibly versatile water-based print practice can be packed into a travel bag or set up on any tabletop for mobile printing. See how Shin-hanga masters created almost photorealistic prints from the materials available from the natural world. Participants will have the opportunity to print their very own Japanese woodcut-style print from a pre-carved block. Lana Lambert is a printmaker, illustrator, and artist from Faber, VA. She recently completed her master’s degree at Vermont College of Fine Art. Her love and fascination with the print world was fostered by her alma mater, the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington, DC where she learned techniques in etching, lithography, silk screen, letterpress, and woodcut.More information can be found at LanaLambert.com. Shenandoah Valley Art Center presents Kitchen Lithography Workshop with Joan Graybeal Menard. This class will show you the basic idea behind the Lithography printing process. It relies on resistance of oil and water and you can create prints using items you can easily find or have at home. You will make a simple art print using Aluminum Foil as your base, draw an image with marker, crayons, or colored pencils, and then etch it with Coca Cola, of all things! We will print them on the center's printing presses, but this technique can also be hand printed at home. We will explore adding color to the original black and white prints with watercolor monoprint made on kids "Shrinky Dink" plastic." This is a fun process you can do with easy to obtain items. Bring your old kitchen apron, a sketch idea or 3, and the instructor brings the rest. Joan Graybeal Menard is a multi-media artist. Having majored in Printmaking and pottery, selling and displaying both for 40 years, she is now focused on sharing her knowledge and various printmaking techniques with her students.
