The second annual WATERWORKS new works festival runs May 17 through June 2 at Live Arts Theater in downtown Charlottesville. The three-week festival features 19 new theatrical works from local and global playwrights, 16 directors, and over 50 performers. Other featured works include Locally Sourced, the Charlottesville Playwrights Collective, and Community Deep Dive educational workshops. Start and end times vary; visit livearts.org for tickets and information.
Oak Grove Theater's 2024 season kicks off with a presentation of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Winner of the Tony and the Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, this musical features an eclectic group of "kids" competing for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping to never hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming "ding" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake.
Oak Grove Theater presents 5 plays from May through August, and tickets are sold seasonally - $60 per person for all 5 shows. Purchase tickets here. For questions regarding tickets, call Susan Vass at 540-290-4347. Shows start at 8:45 sharp; arrive as early as 6:30 to reserve a seat. Bring along a picnic dinner to enjoy or choose something from the concession stand which opens at 7:30pm.

First performed at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1901, The Three Sisters probes the lives and dreams of Olga, Masha, and Irina, former Muscovites now living in a provincial town from which they long to escape. Their hopes for a life more suited to their cultivated tastes and sensibilities provide a touching counterpoint to the relentless flow of compromising events in the real world. In this powerful play, a landmark of modern drama, Chekhov masterfully interweaves character and theme in subtle ways that make the work's finale seem as inevitable as it is deeply moving.
All tickets will have a fee of $6 added at purchase. ($3 for the Historic Preservation of the Wayne and $3 for Ticket Handling)
