The “Maestra Nidia Góngora” as she is known, is the most recognized singer in the Colombian Pacific and the bearer of the innate tradition inherited from her elders and the leading singers of her community. Nidia’s versatile, innovative music fuses lyrics and rhythms such as currulaos, bundes, jugas, rumbas, and lullabies with a touch of folk, electronic beats and experimental sounds. As the founder and lead singer of Canalón de Timbiquí for over 25 years, a multiple winner of the Petronio Álvarez Festival and a Latin GRAMMY nominee, her music blends ancestral rhythms with contemporary sounds, evoking the thunder, strength, and power that inhabit the jungle and the sea. With haunting vocals her band electrifies the stage and reaffirms Góngora’s role as a guardian of tradition while offering a fresh perspective on Pacific folklore.

Once upon a time, a young prince threw a royal ball to choose his future bride! Everyone in the kingdom was invited, but Cinderella was forced to stay behind by her devious stepfather, Don Magnifico, and her shallow stepsister. However, with the help of her fairy godmother, Cinderella wins the day, transforming herself-and the kingdom-along the way. Adapted for young audiences and featuring beloved music from two different adaptations of the classic fairytale, this family opera is sure to delight audiences of all ages, leaving everyone with a smile on their face and a song in their heart. 35-minute children’s opera sung in English. Featuring acclaimed vocalists and instrumentalists Cristina Vane and Brennen Leigh, together they will perform iconic songs including “This Land is Your Land” (Woody Guthrie), “This Train” (Sister Rosetta Tharpe), “Just Like a Woman” (Bob Dylan), “Angel From Montgomery” (Bonnie Raitt and John Prine), “Car Wheels On a Gravel Road” (Lucinda Williams), and more! Coinciding with the upcoming Semiquincentennial (the 250th anniversary of the United States’ founding), Women of Americana will entertain and inspire audiences at a historic moment in our nation’s history.

Experience the captivating sounds of classical music as JMU’s Symphony Orchestra collaborates with the winners of the 2025 School of Music Concerto Competition. Students from six areas-woodwinds, brass and percussion, strings, piano, and voice-compete, with two finalists from each selected for the final concert.
