Zephyrus Early Music Vocal Ensemble / From Darkness to Light: Music by Women Composers
On April 29 and 30, Zephyrus Early Music Vocal Ensemble presents “From Darkness to Light:
Music by Women Composers.” In this concert of music by female composers from the 9th century to the 21st, Zephyrus uncovers works unjustly neglected by history: from the 9th-century Byzantine abbess Kassia and 12th-century German abbess Hildegard to Renaissance works by Raphaella Aleotti and Maddalena Cassulana, the first female composer to have an entire volume of her music printed. The program also features contemporary works by women, including Reena Esmail, Caroline Shaw, and the world premiere of a commissioned piece by local composer Judith Shatin, professor emerita of music at the University of Virginia.
On Saturday, April 29, the program will be performed at 7:30 pm at St. Paul’s Memorial Church, 1701 University Avenue in Charlottesville. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $5 for students and are avilable on our website, www.zephyrus-va.org, and at the door. The program will be also presented on Sunday, April 30, at 4:00 pm, outdoors at the Charlottesville Waldorf School Pavilion, 120 Waldorf School Road, Charlottesville. The Sunday performance is a pay-what-you-will event. For more information about Zephyrus, please visit us at our website, www. Zephyrus-va.org, on Facebook, or call 434-963-4690. Both concert venues are wheelchair accessible.
