Shenandoah Valley Art Center Class: Introduction to Alternative Process Photography
Shenandoah Valley Art Center presents: Introduction to Alternative Process Photography 1 with Angus Carter. This workshop offers an introduction to historic, hands-on photographic printing methods using light-sensitive chemistry and UV exposure. Participants will explore three distinct processes: cyanotype, with its characteristic blue tones; Van Dyke brown, which produces warm, sepia-like prints; and gum bichromate, a painterly technique using watercolor pigment and a single-layer print process. The workshop emphasizes a practical, process-focused approach. Participants will learn to prepare and coat papers, expose prints using sunlight or UV units, and develop images using water-based methods. All materials will be provided, but students will need to supply their own photographic images for making digital negatives. No prior experience is necessary. By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with a collection of handmade prints and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and craft of early photographic techniques. Angus Carter is an adjunct professor of photography at Mary Baldwin University and serves as the Executive Director of the Staunton Augusta Art Center. A graduate of the Brooks Institute of Photography, he has over two decades of experience in the photographic arts. His work has been exhibited in galleries and museums across the United States, including the Taubman Museum of Art and the Denver Month of Photography Festival. Carter’s artistic practice focuses on alternative photographic processes, blending traditional techniques with contemporary approaches to image-making.
