The Office of Creative Propulsion invites the public to attend the next First Fridays of the Valley on August 7 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m., at The Arts at 131 W. Grace St. This exhibition features photographic and 3D works by John Burgess, who recently retired from an 18-year career as an educator and administrator at James Madison University. "Foundations: A Retrospective from the Golden Age of Roller Coasters" presents a study of the art of roller coaster design as seen at the tail-end of the Golden Age of Roller Coasters. From the late 1920s to the early 1980s, roller coasters flourished through the amusement park system. Foundations seeks to capture the life cycle of roller coasters through four photographic themes: Vistas, People, Structure, and Decay. Through these themes we reflect on roller coasters as sculptural objects, focusing on the inherent aesthetic beauty created by the artisans who created them. Central to this reflection is a replica of the Ocean View Skyrocket, a classic boardwalk style coaster which thrilled patrons in Ocean View Virginia until 1979. Burgess will be on hand during the First Friday event to share stories about capturing these thrilling images.
