In this introductory book art workshop, we will explore a range of simple single-sheet folded structures. As we consider the relationship between subject and form, we will experiment with visual and written content. Participants will complete the workshop with several models and one or more finished book structures.

Please bring: writing paper (a journal or notebook), pencil or pen, additional papers (optional), any broad gesture or simple image-making materials (all optional), such as ink, paint, brushes, stencil paper, soft linoleum to carve, Gelli plates, etc., and (optional) an apron, gloves.

Provided: paper for all structures, bone folders, glue, thread, needles, cutting mats, metal rulers, small utility knives, carving tools for soft linoleum, brayers.

Lyall Harris is a visual artist, writer and arts educator. Her artwork has been widely exhibited and recognized with numerous awards, including the George Hitchcock Prize for painting from the National Academy of Design (NY) and a Purchase Award in Book Art from the University of Utah for a fifteen-book, site-specific project. Her book art can be found in over seventy Special Collection libraries and museums across the United States, including those at Yale, Stanford, Smith, UC Berkeley, UCLA, the University of Washington and in the Betty Boyd Dettre Library at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. In 2026, Lyall was nominated and shortlisted for the National Museum of Women in the Arts international initiative, Women to Watch 2027. Two collections of poetry are forthcoming: Enough from UnCollected Press and Barrier Island, shortlisted for the Anne Sexton Poetry Prize, from Black Spring Press Group. Lyall holds a BA in Art History from Northwestern University (Phi Beta Kappa) and an MFA in Book Art and Creative Writing (Poetry) from Mills College. She has taught book art at the University of Virginia and James Madison University as well as numerous workshops in a variety of venues in the US.
