Local and federal law enforcement officers responded to a reported shooting at Westwood Hills Elementary School in Waynesboro Wednesday morning. One adult was injured, according to reporting from the Associated Press.
A statement from the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said all children are safe and the school was being evacuated, as of 10:18 am Wednesday.
Waynesboro Public Schools said Wednesday afternoon that "all students, staff, and teachers are safe." Westwood students were being reunited with their families at Westminster Presbyterian Church. The school superintendent's statement said all students had been reunited with their parents or guardians, or that transportation was enroute. Law enforcement asked families to not come to the school itself.
All other Waynesboro City Schools were on lockdown for a period Wednesday as a precaution. By 12:30 pm, that lockdown had been lifted. A statement from the superintendent said all other city schools will dismiss on schedule.
The Associated Press reports one adult was injured. A Waynesboro city council member told AP reporters that the shooting was "an isolated event" and that the shooter was no longer a threat. He did not elaborate on that person's status. A spokesperson for Virginia State Police confirmed reports indicating one adult was injured and no children were hurt. Waynesboro police and the Augusta County Sheriff's Office have not yet released any additional information.
A statement from the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms said agents were responding to what it described as "a shooting incident" at the school.
Governor Abigail Spanberger said her office was monitoring the situation and thanked first responders.
