A man is in custody after an hours-long standoff with Harrisonburg police near EMU Sunday.
HPD UPDATE as of 1:45am Monday: A suspect is in custody and two women are safe following an hours-long standoff with Harrisonburg city police.Mid-Sunday afternoon, police responded to a call about a man swinging around a machete and talking to himself on Virginia Avenue near Eastern Mennonite University.Police issued a shelter in place order for the area, including EMU’s campus, after they encountered a man armed with an AR-15 style rifle.The man, identified as 28-year-old Jason Mercado, holed up in an occupied trailer home when he saw police.Early Monday morning, after an hours-long standoff, police fired cans of gas into the home and arrested Mercado.He is charged with two counts of felony abduction.The two women in the house were taken to Rockingham Memorial Hospital to be checked out.
