A new, educational culinary event kicks off in Winchester on Saturday. WMRA's Randi B. Hagi reports.
A smorgasbord of museums and restaurants are gearing up for the first annual "Hungry for History" event, which runs this Saturday through Monday, September 4th. Through presentations, demonstrations, and tastings, they'll explore local food traditions from several eras throughout history.
RENEE BAYLISS: We really thought that it would be a great way to tie in all of our museums and historic sites, since everyone eats!
Renee Bayliss is the creative design and visitor services manager for the Winchester-Frederick County Convention & Visitors Bureau. Some participating locations are combining this event with others, such as the annual block party at the Patsy Cline Historic House.
BAYLISS: You'll be able to learn about how Patsy Cline's family made some of their famous family recipes, and taste some of her black walnut cake. And then, Belle Grove Plantation is having theirs during their wine festival, and they're going to have some chefs doing demonstrations and tastings of historic recipes. We also have an event here at the visitor center which is going to be focusing on American Indians, and there's going to be some different presentations on things like wild food foraging, Indigenous food literature, and storytelling.
Some of the activities are free, and others will have an admission fee. To see a full schedule, go to visitwinchesterva.com.
