The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg and Rockingham is gearing up for their sixth Great Community Give – the annual event that raises money for other nonprofits. WMRA's Randi B. Hagi reports.
Since 2018, the Great Community Give has raised more than $5 million for local organizations across a variety of fields. Amanda Bomfim, The Foundation's director of marketing and program initiatives, said they have 148 nonprofits participating this year.
AMANDA BOMFIM: If folks have a passion for animals, arts and culture, disability services, education, poverty and hunger, the environment, entrepreneurship; there are many causes that these organizations address in their day to day work.
The event kicks off at 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday the 19th. Throughout the day, the organizations will be competing for various prizes sponsored by local businesses. Last year, more than 7,000 people donated a total of $1.7 million. Their goal this year is to reach 8,000 donors and $2 million.
BOMFIM: I hope they know that they are making a difference, whether they give $10, $50, $100. It doesn't matter how much you give. We are all in this together, and we're all here for one common cause, and that's to better Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
A livestream event from 4 to 8 p.m. will feature prize announcements, nonprofit interviews, and a comedy set. Learn more at greatcommunitygive.org. For WMRA News, I'm Randi B. Hagi.
