A man with a knife was arrested at a school in Page County today. WMRA's Randi B. Hagi reports.

At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Page County Sheriff Chad Cubbage said someone called the school at about 10:30 a.m. to report seeing a man nearby who appeared to have a gun on his side. School staff then called 911. The Page County Sheriff's Office, Virginia State Police, and several other agencies responded. Cubbage said they conducted a sweep of the school building, and detained 46-year-old Thomas Benjamin Loving.

Officers found that the object on his side was not a gun, but a knife in a sheath. But the knife was longer than a three-inch pocket knife, making it illegal to have on school grounds. Loving was charged with a misdemeanor. Cubbage said the investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be pending. He did not say what Loving's connection was to the school, and did not take any questions from reporters.

He said law enforcement will have an increased presence at county schools tomorrow. Page County Public Schools announced that Shenandoah Elementary students would have tomorrow off, but all other schools in the division will operate as normal.
