The Rockingham Harrisonburg SPCA is offering half-price adoption fees for cats and kittens as they deal with a very busy kitten season. WMRA's Randi B. Hagi reports.

From now through the end of Saturday, adult cats at the RHSPCA can be adopted for $25, and kittens for $50. They have a lot of kittens that went to foster homes as babies back in May that are now ready to find a permanent home.

HUCK NAWAZ: And in … the first half of June, we had a couple weeks where we had 70 cats a week come in.

Huck Nawaz is the executive director of the animal shelter.

NAWAZ: We purchased lots of kitten condos, is what we're calling them. … which can house up to four smaller kittens, and they have shelves to climb around on. So we've got those set up in the conference room temporarily for the adoption event. We've got those in the adoptable cat room as well.

In an attempt to stem the tide of kittens, they're setting up a program where residents of Rockingham County can request vouchers to get outdoor cats spayed and neutered for free. The Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA is helping them set that up.

ANGIE GUNTER: You know, we're not overwhelmed. So far this year, though, we have transferred in, from shelters that are overflowing, 479 felines so far … we transfer a lot from Rockingham … they are our number one transfer partner for felines.

GUNTER: And I think, for us, the difference is we've had a community cat program for years, where we spay and neuter the community cats for free in our jurisdiction.

The RHSPCA is also having a Summer Jam fundraiser at Massanutten Resort on Sunday with food vendors and live music.
