Explore the contrast of shadows and light on this slow, intentional morning walk in nature. Highland’s Carla Anderson will lead a contemplative walk on Highland’s Rustic Trails on Thursday, June 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., observing how light transforms the landscape and pausing to journal and sketch pattern and contrast. Through guided prompts, participants will consider the interplay of darkness and brightness—not just in nature, but in our own lives.
The cost of this guided walk is $5 per person. Participants must purchase tickets in advance. This walk is designed for participants aged 12 and up and is limited to fifteen individuals. Appropriate hiking shoes, water, insect repellent, and sunscreen are a must. Participants are encouraged to bring their own journals.
Please note that pets are not allowed on the trails except on designated Highland Rustic Trails Dog Days (visit https://highland.org/events/ for upcoming events). Service animals, as defined by the ADA, are always permitted.

Centennial Gala to held on Saturday, June 28, 2025. This one-time special event will be held at the Festival Conference Center at JMU.
The Centennial Gala serves as the celebration event for our 100-year anniversary and is the day two event following the re-enactment of the first Salvation Army Officers arriving in Harrisonburg. The Centennial Gala celebrates our past and The Salvation Army’s ongoing mission to meet the basic needs of individuals and families in our community, all in the name of Jesus Christ. The Centennial Gala helps to raise awareness and funding that stays local, benefiting programming and services right here in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
As we celebrate 100 years of service to the community this year, we recognize that none of our work would be possible without the generous support of partners like you. We are thrilled to invite you to honor this milestone by becoming a sponsor for the Centennial Gala.

An alien arrives in 1957 for a bit of sightseeing of the Civil War. Having missed that one, he decides to start another. He's fascinated by all the new toys the 20th century has invented for making war and wants to play with them, and the General and the Newscaster are happy to oblige. Once a movie starring Jerry Lewis, this play by Gore Vidal is a comedic reminder of the human condition in the vein of My Favorite Martian, Alf, and 3rd Rock From the Sun.
This play is presented as part of Oak Grove Theater's 2025 season. Tickets must be purchased for the entire season - no individual tickets are sold. Season tickets are $60 for all 5 shows. Find more information at oakgrovetheater.org and purchase tickets here.
Oak Grove Theater is a community theater group that performs an annual five-play summer season. The plays are performed at night, out-of-doors, at beautiful Oak Grove just outside of Verona. Please feel free to come picnic at the Oak Grove before the sun sets and the play begins.

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of June, is exhibiting the artwork of Jane Skafte in the 416 W. Main Street Gallery. Skafte commented, “I am interested in design as a way of expressing ideas and exploring the relationship between realism and abstract principles. I am fascinated by rhythms created by natural forms and their shadows and make carefully defined compositions while offering a closeup look into inner spaces. Nature has always been a source of inspiration for me. All of my work reflects a profound appreciation for the environment. I strive to create art that is a poetic rather than a literal depiction of my subject matter, even when drawn to representational landscapes and plant studies. I started working in watercolor several years ago when I transitioned from being primarily a fiber artist, because watercolor had similarities to dyes on cloth. Since then, transparent watercolor has become my favorite medium. I am constantly discovering new possibilities -- from abstraction to realism, precision to blurred suggestions of form. My most recent body of work explores landscapes and natural forms in new palettes—exaggerated, filtered and composed in magnified and cropped compositions. I start with personal reference photographs from my walks. The emerging blooms, new leaves, expressions of natural form through the life cycle at various times of year and different lighting conditions provide much inspiration.” The exhibition will be open to the public: June 3 – 28, Tuesday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., Saturday 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 416 W. Main Street, Waynesboro, VA 22980.
