Harrisonburg high schools to re-open Tuesday, September 17

UPDATE 10:05pm:

As posted on the Harrisonburg City Schools website

"We want you to know that the source of the threat against our high schools has been identified by the Harrisonburg Police Department and the person of interest will not be at any of our campuses tomorrow. We apologize for the delay in communicating this information, but we must balance our communication to families with the HPD’s investigative work. We want to thank the HPD for their skilled and tireless work on this case. We are so very grateful for their partnership.

Threats like this have a significant impact on our schools and community. Please read this letter about the importance of speaking to your students about making school threats.

This is a joint statement from Harrisonburg Police Department and HCPS. In cooperation with HPD, Harrisonburg High School and Rocktown High School will re-open tomorrow, September 17.

We understand that recent social media threats have raised concerns. Please rest assured that we take every threat very seriously and HPD is committed to investigating and holding accountable those responsible, while always protecting our school campuses. Our priority is the safety of our students and staff. In partnership with HPD, we have a dedicated security plan for tomorrow to provide an enhanced safe transition back to the classroom. Mental health professionals will also be available to support our students as needed."

Original Report: 7:10am:

Harrisonburg High School and Rocktown High School will be closed today (Monday, Sept. 16) while the Harrisonburg Police Department continues an investigation into a new threat.

City public schools said Monday morning that the threat was specific against Harrisonburg High School but involves students at both high schools. The threats mentioned in a prior communication are not credible, and the city's middle and elementary schools will be operating on a normal schedule today.
