Hospitals + Poverty = ?

Virginia Mason Hospital and Pavilions

Are Virginia hospitals in jeopardy?

Some people think so.  They say that, due to recent changes in federal law, medical centers across the Commonwealth will lose more than 200 million dollars this year.  Losses are predicted to be far greater in the years ahead.  And some Virginia hospitals could actually be facing bankruptcy.

Ironically, these predictions are tied to a debate currently raging over healthcare for the poor.

That debate, and the financial health of Virginia hospitals, are on our examination table.

Guests:
Fred Costello - Chief Medical Officer, Augusta Health

R. Edward Howell - Chief Executive Officer, University of Virginia Medical Center.

Laurens Sartoris - President, Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Tom Graham was Senior Producer and host of WMRA's Virginia Insight from 2006 to 2015.
