More Voices More Choices

More Voices More Choices

How can a simple change to the ballot enable a better voting experience, better campaigns, and ultimately better government? Visit Charlottesville’s Central Library on February 18, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for a League of Women Voters Community Dialogue titled “More Voices More Choices”.

The concept behind ranked choice voting allows voters to rank which candidates they like best instead of casting a ballot for a single person. It is considered a way to reduce negative campaigning and incentivize candidates to appeal to a broad cross-section of voters instead of the most fervent partisans. It also encourages non-traditional candidates to run for office.

Ranked choice voting has been successfully used in Arlington County for local elections and at the Virginia Republican Party convention for choosing candidates. Last year, the Virginia State Board of Elections approved regulations laying out the finer details of ballot formats, counting procedures, and educational materials.

The event speaker is Liz White, a founding member of OneVirginia2021, and now Executive Director of UpVoteVirginia. In this role, she works to make it easier for Virginians to vote, promotes government transparency and ethics, and advocates for a more independent redistricting commission. Liz is an expert and highly sought speaker on ranked choice voting.

The League invites the public to attend this free event at the Central Library, located at 201 East Market Street in Charlottesville. The Swanson Room is on the third floor. Parking is available at the Market Street parking garage one block away.

Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters is a non-partisan organization that works to increase understanding of major public policy issues and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League looks forward to continuing its mission with this event.
