Public Radio Showcase

Saturday, September 4th at 4pm, BackStory presents Looking for Work: A History of Unemployment.

Three years into the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, almost 1 in 10 Americans is out-of-work. In many parts of the country, the situation is even worse. On this special Labor Day edition of BackStory, the History Guys take on the history of joblessness, and explore what it has meant for previous generations of Americans.

How has the changing nature of employment shaped the experience of not having a job? Have the moral connotations of work evolved? Are people more or less attached to their professions than they used to be?
